Charla Banjara draws on a revamped traditional repertoire that travels from Rajasthan to Andalusia, passing by Persia and Kurdistan along the way. This performance offers an encounter with classical Persian music, flamenco’s cante jondo and the popular songs of North India and Pakistan, presenting a personal interpretation of age-old musical and dance expressions. Here Sufi trance brushes up against duende and the memory of tradition uniquely expresses itself within this mix.
Charla Banjara means ‘gypsy conversation’. The combination of the Spanish word charla and the Hindi word banjara refers to the gypsy people of North India. And it truly is a conversation – a veritable dialogue between Eastern and Western artists and cultures.
Dance converses with music and song, just as it does so naturally at the heart of gypsy and Eastern cultures. The improvisation is masterful, guided by emotions and inspiration of the moment.
